Independent’s Happy List 2020

Proud to be named on the Independent’s Happy List 2020

Well, June brought some really surprising news – quite out of nowhere, I’ve found myself on the Independent’s annual Happy List. I was gobsmacked – there are so many brilliant people on the list, from carers to teachers to volunteers, and then, would you believe it, me! To say I was speechless would be an understatement!

I’m absolutely humbled to have been awarded a spot on the list – it feels surreal to see myself alongside all the amazing people doing amazing things who are also named on it. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to say a big thank you whoever nominated me. I can’t put into words how grateful I am – I have been overwhelmed emotionally and had to take some time on Monday morning to just reflect over a cup of coffee and take it all in!

This isn’t just about me though; as well as the 49 others on the list there are thousands of people out there doing their bit to make positive change and help their communities – some of whom I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with over the recent months – and they deserve congratulations just as much. In these difficult times, it is our communities who we turn to for support, and it’s amazing to see people pulling together to help each other in whatever ways they can. It gives me enormous hope for the future – we will make it through this crisis, together.

I’m grateful to be able to play my own small part in the response to Covid-19 – if any of my newsletters or zoom meetings or videos have helped somebody to access the support they need to aid their community, then it’s all been worthwhile. I feel resolved to work even harder going forwards; with lockdown easing and the country beginning to re-open, money is going to be a central focus for repairing the damage the pandemic has caused, and it’s vital that that money reaches the social organisations and communities who need it most.

I love what I do, and this feature has shown me exactly why I do it – to help as many people as possible to make a positive social impact. It means so much to me to be recognised for my work, but I know there’s still so much more I can do, and I’m going to try my hardest to give back to and empower the community in any way I can.
